Samuel L. Hornbeak

Samuel Hornbeak first attended Trinity as a student in 1873 when he was eight years old. (Trinity then had a primary department.) He received a B.A. degree in 1885 and joined the TU faculty in 1891 as professor of science. He later served as dean and president and retired as professor emeritus in 1940.

In this photograph Talor Chandler, Jr. (class of 1956) models a Davy Crockett coonskin hat for co-ed Kay Caskey (class of 1955) while Jim Sanders (class of 1954) expresses his displeasure. The upperclass student in the photograph were debating whether to require incoming freshman to wear this type of cap instead of the traditional beanie. The beanie won out.

Trinity's olympic size swimming pool was a gift to the university by D. Harold Byrd, Jr. in honor of his parents, Col. And Mrs. D. Harold Byrd Sr. Dedication ceremonies took place on November 6, 1959.

On 6 November 1959, the university swimming pool was dedicated in honor of Mr. and Mrs. D. Harold Byrd, Sr. Their son, D. Harold Byrd, Jr. was the principal donor of the $145,000 facility. Pictured in the photograph are swimmers from Trinity's Synchronized Swimming Club and the San Antonio Aquatic Club.
