Dr. Lewis was Trinity University's first tenured African American professor. He was named the founding Director of the Graduate Urban Studies Program at Trinity University in 1968. He served in that role from 1968 to 1973 and was appointed George W. Brackenridge Distinguished Professor Urban Studies in 1982, before retiring in 1990. He was the author of numerous publications and was active on local, state, and national boards and commissions, including the Coalition for the Education of Black Children and Youth in Texas, Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, and the Texas Urban Development Commission.
